Catching with Dj Harvey
DJ Harvey the latest artiste signed to Sanchez Productions Ltd, who brought us Bhangra music sensation Jaz Dhami and their new recruit is nothing short of talent, as he gears up to send the industry into melt down, with an album that is simply on fire. DJ Harvey’s first single release “Enhi Sohni” from the album has been released and he working on the next one. We caught up him recently to bring you this exclusive interview.
Tell us about your background in music, how did you first get involved in music and when did you first take up the decks?
I started getting into music from as early as 11, when I began piano lessons which I am now a grade 4! I used these skills to go on to play the keyboard in my father’s band called Sangam which was an awesome experience and I learned a great deal about performing and the entertainment industry.
However, in terms of my Djing career it wasn't until the age of 16 that I took my first steps into the profession. I began as a rodeo with a DJ in my hometown and then around the age of 20 I got my first set decks and that was when my obsession with music went to a different level.
You've just released your debut single titled 'Ehni Sohni' which featured a crazy collaboration between; Miss Pooja, TS Theer & General Levy. What was the thinking behind the track?
I just wanted to make something a little bit out of the box. Many associate Miss Pooja and TS Theer with Asian artists and I just wanted to bring a different element to the music and incorporate the vocals of General Levy. The initial proposal was a bit out there but in the end it worked out great. But that's what I'm about really; I wanted to move away from the traditional aspects of making the 'norm' Asian sounds and move into incorporating mainstream sounds into tracks.
This is because I have grown up listening to all kinds of music, and I feel it is important for me to stay true to my roots and be as creative as possible using the sounds I grow up with from traditional Asian beats to sound oh dance, and R&B.
'Ehni Sohni' debuted at No.13 on the Official Download Chart, what was the feedback you got for your debut single?
The feedback that I have received from my debut has been great. I have received allot of love for the track which I am very grateful for and I have generated a great fan base. I would just like to thank everyone who has supported me and downloaded the track.
You've been busy in India shooting your next video; can you tell us who's going to feature on it and what type of sound can we expect?
It’s a more traditional sound this time and the track features Jaswinder Daghamia, an artist that has an amazing vocal ability, and an artist that I truly respect. He has created hit after hit and most importantly he still remains as humble as ever which is great. The video was shot in a stunning bath castle in Punjab and it’s a lively track which is colourful and energetic, that complements the track perfectly.
After this track I am releasing a romantic track which features Jaz Dhami and bollywood playback singer Jaysheree, this will be out in the New Year. We shot this video again in India and this video has a contrasting style to it, it’s softer and warmer to reflect the songs lyrics which centre on the feelings and emotions that you have when you are falling in love.
The new trend is to seemingly bring out consecutive singles with no real album; can we expect a DJ Harvey album to be released and who will be featuring on it?
Oh yes, my album is near completion and it will be out in the New Year. Fair play those that do bring out singles after singles but I am in his industry to make my mark, and I feel having a solid album after your 3rd release is highly important as it shows your dedication and commitment to the scene.
In my album itself it features artists such as Jaz Dhami, Jaysheree Shivram, Jaswinder Daghamia, Miss Pooja, TS Theer, General Levy, Late Kaka Bhaniawala, Vigelanti, Nirmal Sidhu and many more.
Whose album or music have you been playing in your car over the past year or so?
As I said I enjoy a cross section of musical genres from romantic ballads, to cheesy pop, to hip hop and bhangra which are all reflected in my album. At the moment I'm really feeling Usher's new album, an artist who oozes individuality which I find is a key to the success of good music artists.
OK so as a seasoned DJ, what ONE song would you play to get a dead party started - Can only be one, and why?
It can be only be Theke Walli by Jaz Dhami or Chabi by Baljit Malwa.
What's the craziest thing you've seen at a gig?
Well some things I really cant repeat, there is allot of crazy people out there. But one funny incident that I can mention, happened at a wedding party in Birmingham. I started off playing a bhangra set and then I moved on to playing pure dance and R&B and what happened was I could see the auntys and uncles in the venue jumping up and down to the beats which was absolutely fantastic!
What are the plans for DJ Harvey over the next 6-12 months?
There is alot of plans for DJ Harvey over the coming months. My main priority is to get my second single out at the end of November and the accompanying a video and then I will be releasing my album in the New Year. In between all this I will be continuing to DJ up and down the country. I also have a few shows in the US next month which I am looking forward to.
