Social network is obviously a very important tool to attract audiences to the product. How much do you depend on it?
It’s about social media nowadays and traditional PR will sooner or later take a backseat. I don’t feel any artist should depend upon it but I view it as a medium to stay in touch with my fans that I don’t necessarily have direct access to.
In the earlier days it was all about fans mails and phone calls but now it’s all about Twitter and Facebook. I personally access my accounts and don’t have a team ghost writing for me. Social media definitely reaches out to a wider audience that mainstream press may not be able to reach out so spreading the word becomes faster.
Any collaboration with your wife Nindy Kaur?
Yes we are planning a Valentine mash-up for next year. She’s working on a couple of collaborations of her own with some mainstream artists too but the big one is a new single with the two of us and Raftaar. Wait till you hear that and it will blow the audience away.
What has been your memorable and worst part of your musical journey?
The best part was that I fell in love with an amazing woman called Nindy from a song like Patlai Soniyia Patlai from The Debut and had a fine-looking son, Anoop with her. The worst part was that I lost one of my closest confidants Kuly paji on my expedition to achieving a dream
If you could work with someone who would it be and why?
It would be Jay Z and Rihanna together. I just fancy their individualistic panache and musical styles.
What song would you like to work on again and why?
None actually because every song we put out had a memory attached to it and that worked with the audiences. When a song is reworked on it means as a singer you are not very confident of your product.
Who’s your inspiration?
My son Anoop. He teaches me something new every day and he’s the reason why I look forward to every single new day as a novel start. My work is inspired by my travel around the world, the music I listen to, and the people I meet.
What are your views on clean lyrics and music?
The 21st century generation is fast evolving and there’s nothing called clean in their dictionary. Who really listens to the soft slow classics anymore? The music industry is witnessing a whole new revolution. I think clean lyrics are important to preserve the flavour of our forefathers but there will be a close knit group of people who will be active ambassadors of this traditional cult.
You are working with 50 cent, tell us more.
Yes we have a signed a merchandising headphone exclusive deal for Asia with him. We maybe organising a tour together in India too provided we have the right set of investors
Wow now that is big! So moving on what do you do when not working and touring?
I make Nindy who is a fantastic sous-chef cook a lot of exotic dishes for me. I like to indulge in a lot of outdoor activity with Anoop after his school. We love watching movies together.
How do you and Nindy manage touring, working as well as spending time with your son?
Well most of our shows are in India which is like a 24 hour flight so we generally try to club in all shows and meeting together during one week. At times Nindy flies in and flies out just to be with Anoop in case we are doing a longer haul or we just bring Anoop along with us during his holidays from school.
We have a prodigious manager in Ankit Khanna and he just effortlessly puts together a schedule which doesn’t exhaust the living nightmares out of us. Touchwood till date Anoop has never complainedand his studies and not been effected at all.
I feel sorry for Nindy the most as she don’t want to spend another day out in India without Anoop so she flies straight out after the show just to even get to see him for 1 day and fly back again. She really is a mother and wife first not an artist. I just drag her into it because of continuous demand from the fans and promoters.
Anoop had his first hit with Bling Bling, Mr. Singh which caters to the youth and has over 1 million views on YouTube – will we see more from him?
Yes, for sure! Anoop is a character and always wants to try new things. Bling Bling Mr. Singh started out as a school project and turned into being a full blown track and video.
The response has been overwhelming, but right now he is concentrating on his studies.
I heard you have a new clothing line coming out, could you elaborate?
It’s all about being proud to be Indian and the world giving a standing ovation to desi fashion. It’s called SOS Clothin Inc, taken from the formation Swagged Out Sardars. It’s not clothing designed for Sardars only. It’s a movement of fashion blending it with music culture.
“You don’t have to be a Sardar to wear SOS Clothing, but you will be respected as one if you do”
Tell us something we don’t know about you.
I believe in being truthful and charitable. I have aided many of my friends in bringing them into the music scene and giving them a livelihood and a celebrity status. Unfortunately these are the very same people who have betrayed me because money and fame blinds them. But that doesn’t change me as a person and I continue to help new people that cross my path as I’m a firm Karma believer. Nindy and I have helped many and continue to do so.
No matter how much money I make or fame I earn, it will never just go to my head. I will always remain a modest person by heart. Nindy and I always indulge in a lot of charity work and Gurudwara Seva locally to help where ever we can. It’s about being a true person and doing well in your life without asking for anything back.
It’s about being grateful and giving back to God who has given us so much.
Any message to your fans?
Don’t get carried away with rumours. Experience it for yourself and then believe it. Always support the authentic music makers and promote quality music. It is you guys who make us half the celebrities we are and we would never want to tamper with the trust you show exhibit towards us.
Thank you from all of us from SimplyBhangra we wish you all the success and best.
