World Bhangra Day, to be hosted by Brit Asia star Sukhi Bart, promises to be a grass roots celebration of Bhangra on a global scale and will be the first of its kind and will see an international celebration of the Art form of Bhangra through music and dance. 
During the event there will be live links and Bhangra performed in unison in key cities around the world including Birmingham, Madrid, Patiala, Mumbai, Singapore, Brisbane, Vancouver, Mexico City and New York – and Huddersfield. 

The main attraction will be Malkit Singh who is billed as the world’s most successful Bhangra performer and singer. He has made 21 albums and toured 36 countries and is Bhangra's biggest selling artist in music history. He was presented with an MBE in 2008.  

Also appearing will be Shin who is singer and front man of the Bhangra Band DCS. He is also the star of the musical 'Britain’s Got Bhangra.’  

A performance piece will start the event showing the evolution of Bhangra from its rural roots in Panjab to its current form. There will also be a live dance performance involving children from schools across the region which will be synchronised live with performances in India, Singapore, Australia, Canada, North and South America. Screens will show these live performances from around the world during the live stage performance. The World Bhangra dance routine has been taught to dancers from The Mount, Linthwaite Ardron, Colne Valley Specialist Arts College, Kirklees College, University of Huddersfield and many more schools over the next few weeks.  

The performance is the brainchild of VIRSA which is a community project which has received £30,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, ‘Bhangra Renaissance.’ They aim to strengthen the understanding and the preservation of memories based around Bhangra through oral histories/recordings; an exhibition currently running at Lawrence Batley Theatre and finally a book launch in summer covering the project and World Bhangra Day. 
VIRSA is led by young professionals and volunteers from the community who research, practice and celebrate the heritage of South Asian Arts in Kirklees.
