Desi Live Goes Nationwide
DESI LIVE GOES NATIONWIDE
Desi Live, one of Toronto’s most popular urban desi radio shows, is now moving to the US airwaves becoming the first nationally syndicated radio show of its kind in the United States.
Hosted by Johney Brar (DJ JoN-E of BBC Soundcrew) the show has had a tremendous four year run on CHRY 105.5FM in Toronto, being rated as one of the top three programs on the station. However, Johney announced in October 2008, that he will be leaving CHRY 105.5FM permanently at the end of the month, concluding his four years of programming on October 27, 2008.
The reason for his move was because he was offered the opportunity to host his show on a nationally syndicated basis in the United States with HD Radio provider WorldBand Media, beginning in December 2008.
The shows title remains "Desi Live," however it expanded from a one hour to a two hour format. Desi Live has also begun airing live programming five nights a week, weeknights 8PM - 10PM on the WorldBand Media Network (HD Radio). While the show is available on the airwaves in the United States, listeners abroad can tune in via the web on www.worldbandmedia.com.
Johney started his DJ’ing career in 2001 with the creation of BBC Soundcrew. Over the years he has opened for some of the top names in the bhangra industry, including Panjabi MC, Jassi Sidhu/B21, Apache Indian, Lehmber Hussainpuri, Sukshinder Shinda, RDB and H-Dhami, as well as releasing popular albums and mix cd’s. The show plays the best in Bhangra, Hindi, Urban Asian as well as featuring new and upcoming talent from across the world and interviews with popular South Asian figures. This is the first attempt to nationally syndicate a Desi/Bhangra Show in North America, making Johney Brar the youngest desi radio host on a national level.
When asked on his feelings of this tremendous opportunity, Johney replied “ I’m really proud of the fact that my show was successful enough to expand to a greater market, but I do feel that there is work to be done to effectively adapt my show from a local Toronto show to nationally syndicated one. We’ve got a huge South Asian population here in North America but its pretty spread out. WorldBand Media is attempting for the first time to go in to the major cities and cater to the South Asian audience on a national level and I’m very excited to be apart of it.”
