BBC Asian Network celebrates the 90’s
The BBC Asian Network celebrates the 1990’s on 31 May, when it dedicates a whole day of programming to the decade. From 7am until 1am (Tuesday 1 June), the network showcases a collection of standout moments from the era, with the majority of the day’s playlist including the best of the decade’s Bollywood, Bhangra and Desi tracks.
Kicking off programming, the Adil Ray Breakfast show from 7am showcases the comedy classic Goodness Gracious Me, playing interviews and clips from the long running series and giving listeners an insider view with backstage clips.
At 10am, Sonia Deol focuses on the BBC programme Network East. The show includes interviews and musical performances from some of the 90s’ biggest stars including Junoon, Shah Rukh Khan and Gulshan Grover
Between 1pm-3pm, Raj and Pablo pick their favourite Bollywood soundtracks from the 90's.
Early morning presenter Waqs moves to 3pm on the Bank Holiday and celebrates Apache Indian, Cornershop and Babylon Zoo. The show includes key moments from their careers, including the first time Asian lyrics were heard on Top of the Pops in 1993 and Cornershop’s performance on Later with Jools Holland in 1997.
At 6pm, Gagan Grewal highlights the local music producer Bally Sagoo. Looking at his Bollywood connections, the show also includes the performance of Dil Cheez on Top of the Pops in October 1996.
Zarina Khan celebrates the Sabri Brothers at 8pm with a clip from their performance at the Network East Concert Special in January 1995.
DJ Kayper ends the day from 10pm, with a programme dedicated to Talvin Singh, showcasing tracks from the Anokha - Soundz of the Asian Underground album and a clip of Talvin winning the Mercury Music Prize in September 1999.

We have some amazing highlights including Bally Sagoo and Apache Indian on Top Of The Pops, classic sketches from Goodness Gracious Me, and live music from Junoon and the Sabri Brothers, plus the best 90's music through the decade."
